GLAUCOMA
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a complex, progressive disease where damage to the optic nerve can cause blindness.
It has a hereditary component, and is a disease of poor circulation to the the optic nerve, with the main cause being increased pressure in the eye.
Except for angle closure or neovascular glaucoma, it is usually painless, doesn't blur your vision or make your eyes red, and that is why significant damage can occur before it is detected. As glaucoma progresses, peripheral vision is lost and the optic nerve undergoes characteristic changes, including loss of nerve tissue.
Dr. Wagnon has up-to-date equipment that he uses to check for nerve fiber loss and peripheral vision loss, so he can watch for progression of this condition. Dr. Wagnon has a large glaucoma practice and can discuss your options for treatment, including eye drops, laser surgery, and more traditional eye surgery.
Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness.
